Two Years of Autonomous Targeting Onboard the Mer Opportunity Rover

چکیده
The Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS) system provides automated, sciencedrive data collection for planetary rovers. AEGIS is currently being used onboard the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission’s Opportunity rover to provide autonomous targeting of the MER Panoramic camera. Prior to AEGIS, targets were typically manually identified in images transmitted to Earth and the rover had to remain in the same location for one to several communication cycles in order to acquire new data. AEGIS analyses new images to detect pre-defined science features of interest, enabling targeted data to be acquired immediately with no delays for ground communication. Targets are selected by AEGIS through the use of onboard data analysis techniques guided by scientist-specified objectives. This paper provides an overview of how AEGIS has been used on the Opportunity rover during its 21 kilometer trek to the Mars Endeavour crater.

AEGIS Automated Targeting for the MER Opportunity Rover
The Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS) system enables automated data collection by planetary rovers. AEGIS software was uploaded to the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission’s Opportunity rover in December 2009 and has successfully demonstrated automated onboard targeting based on scientist-specified objectives. Prior to AEGIS, images were transmitted from the rover t...

During the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission, onboard rover localization has been performed primarily by IMU, wheelodometry, and sun-sensing technologies. In cases where the rover experiences slippage caused by traversing loose soil or steep slopes, particularly in a crater, the onboard visual odometry (VO) technique is applied. A bundle adjustment (BA) method has been performed on Eart...

متن کاملOasis: Onboard autonomous science investigation system for opportunistic rover science
The Onboard Autonomous Science Investigation System (OASIS) system has been developed to enable a rover to identify and react to serendipitous science opportunities. Using the FIDO rover in the Mars Yard at JPL, we have successfully demonstrated a fully autonomous opportunistic science system. The closed loop system tests included the rover acquiring image data, finding rocks in the image, anal...
متن کاملAutonomous Science Technologies for a Mars Rover
This paper presents an architecture and a set of technology for performing autonomous science and commanding for a planetary rover. The MER rovers have outperformed all expectations by lasting over 1100 sols (or Martian days), which is an order of magnitude longer than their original mission goal. The longevity of these vehicles will have significant effects on future mission goals, such as obj...
